Can I cancel an eyeglass order from a doctor’s office? What is the normal policy?

Posted on March 2nd, 2010 by admin

I went for an eye exam yesterday morning and ordered a pair of eyeglasses from the same office. After 24 hours, I called to cancel, but was told that the office would be charged by the laboratory for cancelling any orders. However, they themselves have stated the process could take a week before my glasses would be ready. Therefore, I don’t understand why I would be charge for a cancellation fee after only 24 hours? Is this a normal practice/policy?

With all due respect, I don’t agree with the other answerer. You don’t "have to" agree with their policy, you can rage against the man. They do not have right (legal or otherwise) to set an unreasonable policy. Did you sign something that said the order was not cancellable? They should settle with you, cancel the order in consideration of a payment of a small fee.

Nobody has a unilateral right to dictate terms, it is a contract between two parties. If the terms were not stated, they can not create them to suit their own purposes. They are probably trying to rip you off, and you have to argue with them. Most people just give up and pay, and that’s why bad business practices are allowed to proliferate.

Particularly during difficult economic times, some unscrupulous businesses will try to behave badly, because they need the dough. But that doesn’t mean they are allowed to do it. You have rights and if you don’t stand up for them, nobody else will.

Good luck.

Policies will vary from doctor to doctor. There is no such thing as "normal". Even if the doctor had a policy that was considered to be not normal, that does not matter in your case. What ever that particular doctor’s policy is, you must abide by it…..no matter how normal it may seem!
