Shining a Light on Shadow Banking

Posted on April 26th, 2010 by admin

Over 100 million individuals in the U.S. are underbanked — they can not access or choose not to use traditional bank accounts and financial services. Instead, they use alternative financial services, such as check cashing services, prepaid cards, small dollar loans, remittances, and other nonbank services to meet their everyday financial needs. These alternative financial services, which may or may not be more costly than those offered by a traditional bank, are often preferable for consumers who want convenient, transparent, and easily accessible financial options.

As Congress reconvenes and the effort to overhaul the financial regulatory system resumes, how do the financial services needs of underbanked consumers fit into the broader policy discussion? How can federal policies support responsible, innovative alternative financial services? Join the New America Foundation for an event that probes these questions and more.

Peggy Twohig, the Director for Consumer Protection at the U.S. Treasury Department, will keynote the event with an address discussing the Obama Administration’s proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency. Following the keynote, a panel of progressive industry representatives and experts will illuminate who underbanked consumers are and why they choose alternative products. The CEO of a socially responsible venture capital firm will then follow with a presentation on the economics of serving underbanked consumers. Finally, a panel of policy experts, including a representative from House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank’s office, will discuss policies to ensure underbanked households have both consumer protections and access to safe, reasonably-priced products that meet their varied needs. http://www.newamerica.net/events/2009/shining_light_shadow_banking

Employee Related Lawsuits and EPLI Insurance

Posted on March 21st, 2010 by admin

As a Financial Executive it is especially important to know and make sure your company is covered with Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI). In this episode Jim will have Robin Campbell, an Insurance Specialist with the Pavese-McCormick Agency explain the importance of having an Employment Practices Liability Insurance policy.

This episode is from an actual FENG meeting, with questions from attendees.
The number of employee related law suits has been steadily increasing. In 2004 alone the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission handled about 80,000 Charges. EPLI coverage is critical in protecting companies from the potentially catastrophic cost of employment litigation.

Robin Campbell defines EPLI and the potential impact on employers. The EEOC is the federal agency responsible for enforcing employment discrimination laws, which include hiring and firing, compensation, promotions and layoffs, recruitment, disability leave, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Financial Executives should have a through knowledge of EEOC procedures and policies regarding employee related law suits.
No company is too small or big to have an employee related law suit. Robin Campbell will outline ways for companies to protect themselves and limit the possibility of having an employee related law suit.

Is Corporate Self-Interest Driving Healthcare Reform? – Michael Cannon

Posted on December 6th, 2009 by admin

Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2009/07/15/What_Does_Government-Run_Healthcare_Mean

Michael Cannon, director of health policy studies at the Cato Institute, suggests that big business support for the Obama administration’s health reform is driven by “naked self-interest.” Referring to Wal-Mart and Pharma, Cannon argues that “the administration is carving up the industry, picking winners and losers.”

—–

Government-run health systems, such as the one in Canada, are pointed to by those on different sides of the issue as examples of what to do or not to do in health reform.

What lessons do these systems hold for the United States as it attempts to overhaul its health care system? What policies should Congress steer clear of?

Join Michael Cannon, director of health policy studies at the Cato Institute and co-author of Healthy Competition: What’s Holding Back Health Care and How to Free It, and Sally Pipes, president and CEO of the Pacific Research Institute and author of Top Ten Myths of American Health Care: A Citizen’s Guide, for a discussion.

Pipes recounts her firsthand experience with the Canadian healthcare system, and both panelists explore what lies ahead for the United States. – Cato Institute

Michael F. Cannon is the Cato Institute’s director of health policy studies. Previously, he served as a domestic policy analyst at the U.S. Senate Republican Policy Committee under Senator Larry E. Craig (R-ID), where he advised the Senate leadership on health, education, labor, welfare, and Second Amendment policy.

In addition, Cannon has worked as a health care policy analyst for Citizens for a Sound Economy Foundation in Washington, D.C. Cannon has appeared on CNN, CNBC, C-SPAN, Fox News Channel, and NPR. His articles have been featured in USA Today, the New York Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun-Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle. Most recently, Cannon coauthored the book Healthy Competition: What’s Holding Back Health Care and How to Free It.
